US Open = Worst tiebreaker in sports

Posted on: June 16, 2008 11:15 am

This is something I have felt for a while, and the events of this past weekend give me cause to rant on this a bit.  Let me get this started, I understand not all overtime and tiebreaking procedures are perfect.  In the NFL for example, the kicking team isn't even guaranteed a shot with the ball.  In the NHL, penalty shots are an effective way to end a game, but very anticlimactic if you ask me, same in soccer.  Baseball and basketball seem to have their overtime procedures down pat.  Boxing, way back in the day just went on and on until someone hit the canvas, even if they needed 97 rounds to do so, today they go to the cards and I think the controversies with those has effectively killed the sport.  In Golf, there is no universal overtime on the PGA Tour.  Some tournaments have a sudden death in which they go to a predetermined hole and first player with a better score on a hole wins.  The PGA Championship uses a 4 hole playoff format in which each player gets 4 holes and the lowest cumulative score wins.  However today, in the US Open they will play an entire 18 holes.  This very well COULD be over for all intents and purposes 4-5 holes into the match, and it very well could be a barnburner, however this format is very anticlimactic in my opinion.  I believe that whatever format you choose to use, the only prerequisite should be that you should be able to crown the champ on Sunday

it may be anti-climatic, but it definitely is fair.  As much as I've enjoyed Rocco's comments as of late, he's right in assuming he has virtually no chance to beat Tiger in this 18 hole playoff.  The better player will prevail.  No luck or one-hole advantage (such as  driving  distance) will tell who is the winner, rather the entire gambit of their game over 18 holes will tell who is better.

If it would've been a one hole playoff, Rocco would've won, as he birdied the first hole, and Tiger bogeyed it.  But now after 9 holes Tiger has the lead.  I'm rooting for Rocco, just because I'm half sick of Tiger winning everything, but if I were a betting man...my money is on Mr. Woods.

THIS IS NOT THE WORST IN SPORTS.......

I know a lot of ppl do not watch soccer...but deciding the World Cup on penalty kicks in 2006 was stupid. Having aggregates in soccer sucks.....SOCCERS TIEBREAKERS SUCK!

A lot of ppl will say soccer sucks, but i enjoy watching it...just really stupid they have to be so dumb and get these wierd tiebreakers.

Yet you watched it and gave a play by play...

I hear what you are saying, I wanted to finish it last night, especially when so many had to work today.

In its defense:

a.  Tradition.  Why change now.  It would suck if other tourneys copied it though.

b.  It happened in 1991 when it was in mpls.  the extra day when it wasn't as crowded was a blast.

US Open = Worst tiebreaker in sports

It turned out great today, I must say, but the format I think leaves a lot to be desired.  For instance, I think something like this is a rarity, and a situation in which someone is up by a handful of stroked 5-6 holes into it is more likely and there is little to no drama then.  If they are going to do the 18 hole thing, I would prefer them to play match play and then if there is a mercy killing out there, it could be over after say 12 holes.
